Theology in Country Music: Dead Man Livin’

Jesus said:

John 10:10

10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

The apostle Paul goes on to say:

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Tim McGraw’s song “Live Like You Were Dyin’ ” is a song about a man who gets some bad medical news, and he deals with the news by living a life filled with purpose.  It is a shame that many of us live mundane lives day after day when God wants us to live a life filled with purpose.

Some of us work ourselves to death so we can afford as many toys as we can get our hands on.  At the end of the day we are so tired and stressed that we cannot enjoy the fruits of our labors.  We spend so much time chasing the dollar, pleasure, and selfishness that are lives become meaningless, stressed and mundane.

Jesus says we can have a purpose filled life if we die to self and let him live through us.  Instead of wishing our spouse would make us happy, we should try to make our spouse happy instead.  Instead of buying our kids all the latest gadgets, and then wonder why they don’t appreciate you or the gifts, we should spend quantity with them. Out quality time comes the quality time with our kids we so wish we had.  Kids do not want the best toys, they want the best of you.

Don’t wait for bad news in your lives to show you what is important in life.  Instead die to self and let Jesus live through you.

Until next time,

be a dead man living
