Fathers Day: The God (Dad) He Didn’t Have to Be
John 1:12
12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
Ephesians 1:3-8
3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. 4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.[b] 7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. 8 He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.
The Brad Paisley video speaks of a man who adopts him as his son even though he was not his biological father. This song teaches us two lessons. One is spiritual and the other is for this temporal realm.
The first lesson this song teaches is that God adopted us to be his children through the death and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ. If we believe in Christ we become God’s adopted sons and daughters. Like the lyrics of Brad’s song, God became our dad even though he didn’t have to be. Our disobedience could have left us hopeless, but through Christ we are adopted and have every spiritual blessing. With God we go from “somethin’s missing to a family.” And God always does more than we expect. He is a good Father to us.
The second lesson from the song and the scripture is that we need to imitate Christ and be like him. We need to at least half the dad that God is to us, and that is a high standard.
We give glory to God for being the dad he didn’t have to be to us, and our prayer is that we can be half the dads and moms that he was toward us. By this I mean that we must show his love for and toward others in our lives.
