Theology in Country Music: Addressing the Latest Men’s Sex Scandals. Pt 3 Can Someone Tell You No?

Men of God, can someone in your life tell you NO?  It is my opinion that one reason men cheat on their wives is because they do not have someone in their lives to tell them no.  In the situation of Arnold Schwarzenegger this may have been the case.  I am not making excuses for him, but put  yourself in his place.  You are governor of one the biggest states in the nation, you were once one of the biggest box office busting actors, you are successful, you are rich, who can tell you NO? As men we should have an accountability partner we can speak with if we are having issues or trouble with sexual temptation.

David had no one to tell him no at the time of his fall.  Would you tell such a powerful man no he shouldn’t sleep with a woman who was not his wife.  The scripture tells us 2 Samuel 11: 2-4

Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

Though she was married, David still sent for her and slept with her.  The song you viewed by Randy Travis says it very well: “On one hand I count the reasons I could stay with you, and hold you close to me all night long…….., but on the other hand there’s a golden band to remind me of someone who would not understand.”

Men I know I am getting very real, but we need to hear this.  Even the great evangelist Billy Graham had someone to tell him no.  Before he entered his hotel room Rev, Graham had someone inspect it to be sure no one was inside who could compromise his marriage and ministry. We do not have to face these issues alone.  Get a trusted friend you can trust to help you through these tough and tempting situations.

until next time.

be sure you have someone who cares enough about you to tell you no when it counts,
