Thoughts On Palm Sunday
Today Sunday 04.17.11 is Palm Sunday. This is the day that Jesus rode into the city of Jerusalem on a donkey colt. The scripture tells us in Luke 19: 28-40
God’s Personal Visit
28-31After saying these things, Jesus headed straight up to Jerusalem. When he got near Bethphage and Bethany at the mountain called Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions: “Go to the village across from you. As soon as you enter, you’ll find a colt tethered, one that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says anything, asks, ‘What are you doing?’ say, ‘His Master needs him.'”
32-33The two left and found it just as he said. As they were untying the colt, its owners said, “What are you doing untying the colt?”
34They said, “His Master needs him.”
35-36They brought the colt to Jesus. Then, throwing their coats on its back, they helped Jesus get on. As he rode, the people gave him a grand welcome, throwing their coats on the street.
37-38Right at the crest, where Mount Olives begins its descent, the whole crowd of disciples burst into enthusiastic praise over all the mighty works they had witnessed:
Blessed is he who comes,
the king in God’s name!
All’s well in heaven!
Glory in the high places!39Some Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, get your disciples under control!”
40But he said, “If they kept quiet, the stones would do it for them, shouting praise.”
Today at N.H.C.C., Pastor Mark Moreland shared on this event he mentioned that many things had to fall into place for this event to transpire. This is event was planned, and not just some random or accidental event. First of all the fact that he came in riding a donkey that had never been ridden speaks about Jesus’ power and control over creation. A previously unhidden donkey would have bucked off anyone else because he would not want anyone to ride him.
Another fact is fulfilled prophecy, centuries before the event would transpire, the prophet Zechariah foretold the event: Zech 9:9 declares:
A Humble King Riding a Donkey
9-10“Shout and cheer, Daughter Zion!
Raise the roof, Daughter Jerusalem!
Your king is coming!
a good king who makes all things right,
a humble king riding a donkey,
a mere colt of a donkey.
The book of Zechariah was written about 500 B.C. So centuries before Jesus rode into Jerusalem, God the father said it would come to pass. This event was planned and foretold by God. Fulfilled prophecy is one way to know that Jesus is the Messiah and the son of God. God said it would happen and it did. (More on this will be discussed in future posts).
Another point made was the fact that many knew Messiah would be riding into the city, yet no one else came forward to claim that he was the chosen one. Jesus is the Messiah, and the Savior of the world. My prayer is that you attend a worship service this Easter Sunday. If you are in the Del Rio, Texas area you are welcome at our church. New Hope Christian Church will be celebrating the resurrection of our Lord at an outdoor service at 10:30 AM at Rotary Park. Rotary Park is located next to Brown Plaza.
Sing praises to our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ today. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!!!
until next time, praise his name
